ABOUT Eden Jewelers Of St Thomas
The story of Eden Jewelers is the story of Sunil and Kanchan. A couple with strong vision and determination. When the Great Recession hit in 2008, Sunil, a fourth-generation jeweler, and a GIA certified gemologist gave up every single security to venture out on his own.
Married to Sunil, Kanchan followed suit. Leaving well paid jobs and security was in no way easy, but the determination to succeed was too strong to ignore. And they had the belief that they could create an enterprise different from what they had known made them take the plunge.
Sunil was born into a family of jewelers. He spent many Sundays as a child working with his father in the family business until jewels became an instinct. From his home in India, he moved to Hong Kong to learn the practical aspects of the business. He then moved to New York, where he married Kanchan. Here, he continued working on learning his craft and business.
The couple then moved to St Thomas to start their own business opening Eden in 2009 at Drakes Passage. On day one, their hopes sank to the ground as they had only one sale for 35 dollars…and their first buyer, a teacher, saw their despondent faces and tried to reassure them.
The very next day, the same teacher brought in a group of twenty different teachers who were on island for a convention and staying at the then Marriott Frenchman’s Reef. And it started. Baby steps, with gritty determination, were taken and in five years, Eden became the only mom and pop jewelry store to have Tripadvisor ratings with stellar reviews and a great repeat clientele following.
In 2015, Eden decided to open a sister store that would give back to the community: Eden Living, a lifestyle art and homewares shop with fair market trade products. Just when Eden Jewelers and Eden Living began to revel in being recognized as the most unique stores with custom designs, the island of St. Thomas was hit with two Category 5 Hurricanes in the span of two weeks in 2017. With the stores destroyed and the island without power for over a 100 days, plan B took place. Sunil didn’t hesitate and went back to where his first job had taken him, the Gold Rush town of Skagway, Alaska.
Skagway provided a second home for Eden Jewelers while St. Thomas built itself back. The peace offered in Skagway helped heal the chaos caused by the hurricanes. Skagway welcomed Sunil, his team, and his famed Caribbean Sun collection and the Adam and Eve collection, winning him new recognition in Alaska as well as the Caribbean.
Eden Jewelers now is located in both places: Alaska and St. Thomas.
